Epic Games, known as the developer of Fortnite and the Unreal Engine game engine, is reeling from a new hacking attempt. A hacker group claimed to have managed to access 189 GB of the company’s documents.
189 GB hack claim for Epic Games
Epic Games said it is investigating allegations that a ransomware group called Mogilevich broke into its systems and stole large amounts of data. In a message posted online, Mogilevich said it had “quietly carried out an attack” on Epic Games servers.
It said it had compromised 189 GB of the company’s data, including emails, passwords, payment information and source code.
The group said the data is for sale. Although no specific ransom amount was demanded, Epic Games was given until March 4 to pay. Epic Games said in a statement that it found no evidence to support Mogilevich’s claims.
A company spokesperson said that Epic started investigating after seeing the claims. “Mogilievich has not contacted Epic or provided any evidence of the veracity of these claims. When we saw these allegations, we started investigating within minutes and reached out to Mogilevich for proof, they have not responded,” said a spokesperson for Epic.
If the allegations are true, it would be Mogilevich’s biggest venture yet, having announced its formation just two weeks ago, and its newly revealed ransomware operation. The group has previously claimed to have attacked the websites of automotive company Infiniti USA, customer review platform Bazaarvoice and Ireland’s foreign affairs department.
